Dermoid Cyst

What are dermoid cysts?

Dermoid cysts are a type of ovarian cyst that contain tissue such as hair, skin, or teeth. They are usually benign (non-cancerous) and occur in women of childbearing age.

Symptoms

Some women with dermoid cysts may have no symptoms, while others may experience:

  • Pelvic pain or discomfort

  • Bloating or a feeling of fullness

  • Changes in bowel or bladder habits

  • Abnormal menstrual periods

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is typically by a combination of

  • Pelvic Examination

  • Ultrasound

  • CT scan or MRI

Treatment

  • Observation: If the cyst is small and causing no symptoms, your doctor may recommend periodic ultrasound exams to monitor its growth.

  • Surgery: If the cyst is causing symptoms or has grown significantly, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove it. This can typically be done through laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure.

Risk & Complications

While dermoid cysts are usually benign, there is a small risk of them rupturing, which can cause inflammation or infection. If the cyst is large, it can also put pressure on surrounding organs.

Also twisting of the cyst over its blood vessels can occur, its called torsion. This can cause severe pain and needs emergency surgery.
